Bella's Song? Noooo ... Well,
sort-of ... read on!
We got 3 here, one in MP3 (for those well-versed
in the hearing arts) and 2 more as verses (for those versed
in the reading arts)
At first glance, this song seems
to be about Bella....it begins with her name.....but actually,
it's about a beautiful girl (the Bulgarian word "bela" -
literally "white" - here means "fair, beautiful")....well....maybe
there's not so much difference, actually!
In the song, a beautiful girl from the Rhodope Mountains of
southern Bulgaria is speaking. She says, "Oh young
man, I am so fair that I light up the whole world! The
only part I couldn't reach is Karlak peak [the highest peak
in the Rhodopes] and that's because it was covered in mist. In
that mist there was nothing....except....one black-eyed shepherd
and a fair-haired girl....." Obviously the song
must be going somewhere from there, but that's all we know
of it!
It's a very famous song, actually, commonly considered "the
hymn of the Rhodopes" (that's the mountain range that
bridges from southern Bulgaria into Greece, birthplace of Orpheus.....).
The two girls who sing it on this recording are the Hadzhieva
sisters, Lidia and Venelina. We (Dick & Martha Forsyth,
and Pat Iverson) have known these young ladies since they were
something like 12 and 14, and we were instrumental in getting
them to the U.S. for a month in the early spring of 2000, when
this song was recorded. The recording was made by Larry
Gordon of Village Harmony; Dick Forsyth converted it to an
MP3 file for this website. If anyone is interested in
